Established in 2011, Lotus Elephant Sanctuary plans to be the largest elephant sanctuary on earth. First and foremost, the sanctuary will provide a safe haven for elephants to recover from physical injuries, drug addiction and emotional trauma while rebuilding their societies and population.
Although Laos is listed by the United Nations as an LDC (one of the least developed countries on earth) and is the poorest country in Asia, its proximity to China and its geographical position has caused many international firms to become interested in corporate projects in Laos, which include dam-building on the Mekong and other rivers, high-speed rail projects, and mining projects.
